Must-Know the Importance and Virtues of Performing Umrah

Umrah, also known as minor Hajj, is a spiritual act of worship. Except for the Hajj days, when performing Umrah is makrooh or disliked, the wonderful Sunnah of the Prophet can be performed at any time of the year. Until he returns home, an individual who is performing Umrah for the sake of his Lord is referred to as a pilgrim. Muslims can clearly understand the importance of Umrah and how much Allah SWT loves those who sacrifice their worldly pleasures, time, and money in order to perform holy acts of worship according to the Ahadith.

According to Abu Hurairah (RA), the Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ) Said,

“From one ‘Umrah to another is an expiation for the sins that came in between them, and Hajj Mabrur (an accepted Hajj) brings no less a reward than Paradise.”

(Sunan Ibn Majah 2888)

The above-mentioned hadith means that performing Umrah only once is not recommended, but if an individual is capable and has the physical and financial resources, he or she should do so multiple times during their lives. Regardless of whether you're visiting the holy land for the first time or not, you should be completely prepared to perform it. Unfortunately, many people become Allah Almighty's holy guests but are unaware of the true blessings and virtues of many Umrah actions. It is important for anyone preparing to perform Umrah to learn all of the basics of the holy act of worship, including the required acts and restrictions, as well as the penalties that will be imposed if he makes a mistake. Many people perform Umrah during Hajj, but some ignore this wonderful opportunity to seek forgiveness as well as the reward from the Supreme Creator of the universe. It is the best way to receive the reward by following the greatest worshipper and favorite pilgrim of Allah and His Beloved Prophet (ﷺ).

If you want to understand the benefits of Umrah and the enormous impact this sacred journey has had on people's spiritual states, then let us shed some light on this delightful topic. Many hadith have been related by Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) about the great blessings and rewards of performing Umrah in one's life, and here we collect the most important sayings of our Beloved Prophet (ﷺ).

Jabir (RA) narrated that:

The Prophet was asked about whether Umrah was obligatory? He said: "No. But if you perform Umrah it is more virtuous."

(Jami` at-Tirmidhi 931)

·         The holy act of Umrah is said to completely cleanse one's soul of past sins. If you have the resources, it is recommended that you perform Umrah more than once in your life, as it is the most fruitful way to cleanse your sins from the previous time you performed it.

According to Abu Hurairah (RA),

The Allah's Messenger ﷺ said: "The pilgrims performing Hajj and Umrah are a delegation to Allah.  If they call on Him, He will answer, and if they ask for forgiveness, He will forgive them."

(Sunan Ibn Majah 2892)

·         Umrah is not only a source of getting rewards and blessings, but it also protects you from poverty because its performer spends his money on Allah Almighty's path, so how can He SWT not return him what he spends plus more?

It was narrated that 'Abdullah said:

"The Allah’s Messenger ﷺ said: 'Perform Hajj and 'Umrah consecutively, for they remove poverty and sin as the bellows remove impurity from iron and gold and silver, and Hajj Al-Mabrur brings no less a reward than Paradise.'' (Sunan an-Nasa'i 2631)

·         Umrah, like Hajj, is one of the most spiritual acts of worship for Allah SWT. He SWT loves the person who seeks to serve his Creator by following His path, and Umrah is the holy act in which Allah SWT considers pilgrims to be answering His call.

It was narrated from Zaid bin Thabit; that the Prophet ruled that 'Umrah (a gift given for life) belongs to the heir.

(Sunan an-Nasa'i 3722)

·         When the holy month of Ramadan arrived, Allah SWT raised the rewards for any small deed by seventy times, and the reward for Umrah became equal to performing Hajj with the Holy Prophet (ﷺ). The Prophet Muhammad PBUH advised his companions to perform Umrah during Ramadan because the reward is similar to performing Hajj with the Holy Prophet (ﷺ).

Narrated Ibn `Abbas:

When the Prophet (ﷺ) returned after performing his Hajj, he asked Um Sinan Al-Ansari, "What did forbid you to perform Hajj?" She replied, "Father of so-and-so (i.e. her husband) had two camels and he performed Hajj on one of them, and the second is used for the irrigation of our land." The Prophet (ﷺ) said (to her), "Perform `Umrah in the month of Ramadan, (as it is equivalent to Hajj or Hajj with me (in reward).

(Sahih al-Bukhari 1863)

·         Another spiritual virtue of Umrah is that whoever dies during their Umrah journey will receive the highest reward in Jannah.
